Every parent wants to give their child the best start. When it comes to reading, that doesn’t mean expensive programs or pressure — it means making sure children get the right building blocks in the right order.
Reading is taught, not caught
Talking is natural; reading isn’t. Children don’t pick up reading just by being surrounded by books. They need to be shown, explicitly, how letters represent sounds and how those sounds blend together into words. Without that teaching, many children fall back on guessing — which works for a while, then stops working as texts get harder.
What children need to become confident readers
- Strong oral language. Talking, listening, new words and stories build the foundation reading sits on.
- Phonemic awareness. Hearing the individual sounds in words, and playing with rhyme and syllables.
- Letter-sound knowledge. Knowing which sounds each letter, and later each letter pattern, represents.
- Blending and segmenting. Putting sounds together to read, and pulling them apart to spell.
- Practice and confidence. Regular, successful practice so reading feels achievable.
Where families can help most
You don’t have to be a teacher to make a big difference. Read with your child every day, talk about the stories, sing songs and play rhyming games, and celebrate effort rather than perfection. Keep it short, fun and positive.
