Reading and spelling difficulties are more common than many parents realise, and they are very often fixable. Understanding why a child is struggling is the first step to helping them catch up.
Why children struggle with reading and spelling
Most reading and spelling difficulties come down to gaps in the foundations. A child may not know all their letter sounds, may find it hard to hear the separate sounds in a word, or may never have been explicitly taught how to blend sounds together. Many children learn to compensate by memorising whole words or guessing from pictures and context — strategies that work in early readers but break down as books get harder.
Spelling is the other side of the same coin. To spell a word, a child needs to pull it apart into its sounds and know which letters represent them. If those skills aren’t secure, spelling feels random.
The structured approach that helps
- Find the gaps first. A short screening shows exactly which skills are secure and which aren’t.
- Go back to the right starting point. Fill the missing foundations rather than pushing on with harder texts.
- Teach explicitly and in sequence. Sounds, blending and spelling patterns are taught directly, one step at a time.
- Practise reading and spelling together. Each skill reinforces the other.
- Protect confidence. Small wins, encouragement and work pitched at the right level keep children motivated.
